The Databricks Certified Associate Developer for Apache Spark exam validates that you can build and tune Spark DataFrame applications in Python. It is a 45-question, 90-minute proctored exam that costs US$200, spans seven officially weighted sections from architecture to the Pandas API on Spark, allows no documentation, and has no published passing score.
Last updated October 2026.
The audience is a developer who writes PySpark: data engineers, analytics engineers, and Python developers who load files, shape DataFrames, join and aggregate them, and need to know why a job is slow. The exam is about Apache Spark itself, not about the Databricks workspace, so most of what it tests carries over to Spark on any platform.
There is no required prerequisite. Databricks highly recommends related course attendance and about six months of hands-on Apache Spark experience. That recommendation matters more than usual here, because the exam allows no test aids, including the API documentation. You need to recognize method names, argument orders and defaults from memory, the way you would if you wrote Spark every week.

From the official exam guide (edition covering the live exam as of 30 October 2025) and the Databricks certification page, checked 5 October 2026.
Two details catch people out. First, 45 is the scored count: unscored questions may also appear, they are not identified, and extra time is factored in for them. Second, Databricks does not publish a cut score. Certify uses 70% as its own practice target on the course exams and in the practice hub, and that is our guidance, not an official threshold.
Many questions are code-reading: a short scenario and four PySpark snippets, where the wrong options use a real method with the wrong argument, the wrong order, the wrong mode, or a method that does not exist. That is why reading code fast matters as much as knowing concepts.
Unlike some Databricks associate exams, this one carries official section weights, published on the certification page. The guide lists 32 objectives across the seven sections.
| Section | Weight | Objectives |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Apache Spark Architecture and Components | 20% | 7 |
| 2. Using Spark SQL | 20% | 4 |
| 3. Developing Apache Spark DataFrame/DataSet API Applications | 30% | 10 |
| 4. Troubleshooting and Tuning Apache Spark DataFrame API Applications | 10% | 3 |
| 5. Structured Streaming | 10% | 4 |
| 6. Using Spark Connect to Deploy Applications | 5% | 2 |
| 7. Using Pandas API on Spark | 5% | 2 |
Weights from the Databricks certification page; objective counts transcribed from the official exam guide (30 October 2025 edition).
Sections 1 to 3 hold 70% of the exam: how Spark runs, how it reads and writes through Spark SQL, and the DataFrame API itself. Section 3 alone is close to a third of the paper, covering columns and rows, deduplication, aggregations, dates, joins and unions, schemas, UDFs, broadcast variables and broadcast joins. For the objective-by-objective breakdown and how many questions each weight implies, see the seven exam sections and their weights.
The exam guide names no Spark version, but on its 30 October 2025 date the current Apache Spark release was 4.0, and the objectives name 4.0-era features. Certify teaches Spark 4.0 behavior as current. If your Spark knowledge comes from 2.x or early 3.x material, these are the points to refresh:
pyspark-client package, SparkSession.builder.remote("sc://host:15002"), and spark.api.mode (new in Spark 4.0, classic or connect). The client cannot use RDD or SparkContext APIs.import pyspark.pandas as ps has shipped with PySpark since Spark 3.2. Section 7 also covers Pandas UDFs, the Arrow-backed vectorized form.spark.sql.shuffle.partitions is 200, spark.sql.autoBroadcastJoinThreshold is 10 MB, and cache() on a DataFrame uses MEMORY_AND_DISK.transformWithStateInPandas (Spark 4.0), with applyInPandasWithState as the older API.withColumnRenamed, dropDuplicates, unionByName and join(other, on, how) until the argument order is automatic. For a week-by-week plan by background, read how long to prepare for the Spark Developer Associate exam. Certify's Spark Developer Associate course follows the guide exactly: 7 units that mirror the seven sections, and 40 chapters, one per objective, with objectives that bundle two decisions split into two chapters. Every chapter is a short, visual lesson in PySpark on Spark 4.0, ending with quick-check questions.
| Part | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Unit 1 (Ch 01 to 09) | Architecture and components, starting with why Spark |
| Unit 2 (Ch 10 to 15) | Spark SQL: sources, writes, save modes, tables, views |
| Unit 3 (Ch 16 to 28) | The DataFrame API, through broadcast joins |
| Unit 4 (Ch 29 to 32) | Tuning, skew, AQE, logs and the Spark UI |
| Unit 5 (Ch 33 to 36) | Structured Streaming, through deduplication |
| Unit 6 (Ch 37 to 38) | Spark Connect and deploy modes |
| Unit 7 (Ch 39 to 40) | Pandas API on Spark and Pandas UDFs |
| Section exams | Three, 40 questions in all (Unit 1; Units 2 to 3; Units 4 to 7) |
| Full mocks | Three, 45 questions and 90 minutes each, sampled at the official weights |
175 practice questions in all. Course structure last verified 5 October 2026.
The practice hub drills weak sections and runs the mocks as timed sessions, and the readiness quiz gives a quick read on where you stand before you commit. Unit 1 (all nine chapters and Practice Exam 1) is free; the rest is a $9.99 one-time unlock (see pricing).
The exam has 45 scored multiple-choice questions with a 90-minute time limit. Unscored questions may also appear without being identified, with extra time factored in, so the form can show more than 45.
Databricks does not publish a passing score for this exam. Certify uses 70% as its own practice target, but that is guidance, not an official cut score.
No. The exam allows no test aids, including API documentation, so you need to recognize PySpark method names, arguments and defaults from memory.
All code on the current exam is Python (PySpark). Scala is not shown, and Datasets come up only as the typed Scala and Java form of a DataFrame.
Registration is US$200, delivered online with a proctor or at a test center. The certification is valid for two years, after which you take the full live exam again.
Certify's Spark Developer Associate course covers all seven sections in 40 mobile-first lessons, with three section exams and three full-length mocks. Unit 1 is free to start.
