How Long Does It Take to Prepare for the AWS AI Practitioner Exam?

Most candidates need 3 to 4 weeks of part-time study, roughly 25 to 30 hours, to pass the AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) exam. If you already build with foundation models on AWS, 1 to 2 weeks is realistic. Coming in new to both AWS and AI, budget 6 to 7 weeks.

These assume 7 to 8 hours a week. AIF-C01 is foundational, the same tier as Cloud Practitioner, and there are no prerequisites. AWS describes the target candidate as having up to six months of exposure to AI and ML technologies on AWS, which is background rather than a gate.

Half your hours belong in two domains

AIF-C01 serves 65 questions, of which 50 are scored and 15 are unscored trial items that are not identified during the exam. Applying the published domain weights to those 50 questions is the fastest way to decide where the hours go.

Domains 2 and 3 together are 52% of scored content, about 26 of the 50 questions. That is the planning headline: this is a generative AI exam with an AI and ML foundation underneath, not a general AI exam with a generative chapter attached. A study plan that spends its first two weeks on supervised versus unsupervised learning has spent them on 20% of the paper.

A concrete 4-week plan (the typical case)

Week 1
AI and ML fundamentals, quickly. AI versus machine learning versus deep learning, supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning, common use cases, and the ML lifecycle from data collection to inference. Cover it properly, then move on. It is 20% and it is the prerequisite for everything after.
Week 2
Generative AI fundamentals. What foundation models and large language models are, tokens and embeddings, prompt engineering basics, and where generative systems fail (hallucination, cost, latency, non-determinism). Amazon Bedrock is the service that carries this domain.
Week 3
Applications of foundation models. The largest domain: design considerations for foundation model applications, prompt engineering techniques, fine-tuning versus retrieval-augmented generation, and how model performance is evaluated. If you only get one domain fully right, make it this one.
Week 4
Responsible AI, security, then drill. Bias and fairness, transparency and explainability, data protection and access control for AI workloads, and the features that attach to them: Guardrails for Amazon Bedrock for output safety, SageMaker Clarify for bias and explainability. Then work full practice sets across all five domains.

Two hours in Amazon Bedrock is worth a week of reading. Send a few prompts to a foundation model, change the temperature, and watch the output move. Domains 2 and 3 stop being vocabulary the moment you have done it once.

The cheapest marks on the exam

Responsible AI and Security, Compliance, and Governance are 14% each, which reads as skippable and is not. Together they are 28% of scored content, about 14 questions, the same footprint as the largest domain on its own.

They are also the most conceptual material on the paper, and the AWS features map cleanly onto the concerns they address. An afternoon each is usually enough to move both from blank to solid, which is the best return per hour anywhere in this plan.

Scoring shapes revision: the passing score is 700 on a 100 to 1,000 scale and scoring is compensatory, so you are aiming at one overall total rather than five separate bars. A weak domain can be carried. A blank one cannot.

Should Cloud Practitioner come first?

It does not have to. Both are foundational, neither has prerequisites, and AIF-C01 can be your first AWS certification. Taking CLF-C02 first mainly helps with Domain 5, where AI security and governance sit on general AWS identity, access, and data protection concepts.

If you already hold Cloud Practitioner, subtract roughly a week: Domain 5 will feel like revision, and general AWS vocabulary stops being an obstacle. If AI is the unfamiliar half rather than AWS, keep the full four weeks and spend the saved time in Domain 3.
