AZ-900 is a fundamentals-level exam with no prerequisites, aimed at proving cloud fluency rather than engineering skill, which is why the typical timeline is measured in days and short weeks rather than months. It is also the rare certification with no renewal pressure: Microsoft Fundamentals certifications do not expire, so there is no reason to rush a date you are not ready for.

The surprise in that table is Domain 3. Most self-study plans treat management and governance as an afterthought, but at 30 to 35% it is nearly the size of the services domain. Cost tools (the pricing and TCO calculators, Microsoft Cost Management), governance features (Azure Policy, resource locks, tags), and the monitoring and deployment tools are close to a third of the exam.
Thirty minutes in the portal beats an hour of notes. A free Azure account, one resource group, and one storage account makes the resource hierarchy concrete. Domain 2 is far easier to remember once you have clicked through it.
Microsoft does not publish a fixed question count for AZ-900. Its published guidance is that most Microsoft certification exams contain 40 to 60 questions, and that the count varies between exams and over time. What is fixed is the time: 45 minutes of question time inside a 65-minute seat, which works out to roughly 45 to 65 seconds per question across that range.
For revision, that means drilling recognition speed matters more than stamina. AZ-900 questions reward knowing what a service is for in one sentence: if your practice-assessment misses cluster in one domain, the fix is re-reading that domain's task statements in the study guide, because questions are written directly from them.
The passing score is 700 on a 1 to 1,000 scale, and it is scaled rather than a percentage, with no per-domain bar to clear. There is no published pass rate to calibrate against, so treat a consistently strong practice-assessment score as the signal to book.
